What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disorder that causes deficits in communication, social interactions, and repetitive or routine behaviors. It may be more challenging for a person on the spectrum to learn solely by observing and interacting with the world around them. They may be over sensitive to sensory stimulation, such as light, certain textures, or certain tastes. They may also have difficulty with daily transitions and be more hyper-focused on specific routines, hobbies, or interests. Because of these challenges, people with autism may become anxious more frequently and easily, and commonly engage in problem behavior, including self-injurious behavior, meltdowns or tantrums, elopement, mouthing items, and aggression.
Autism is prevalent in 1 of 36 children, making it a large community for the affected individuals and their loved ones.
Though each person with ASD might encounter a variety of challenges, they also possess a variety of strengths. Through researched-based interventions, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), people with ASD can learn to not only function, but thrive in an ever-changing environment. Every person has a unique way of viewing the world, and teaching loved ones to be flexible and compassionate as they develop a different perspective on life.
What is Applied Behavior Analysis?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a researched-based behavioral therapy that focuses on decreasing problem behaviors and increasing relevant replacement behaviors. This is accomplished through multiple strategies, such as positive reinforcement, function-based interventions, teaching through play, and via the child’s natural environment.
Research shows early intervention (between ages 18 months to 5 years) is crucial to achieve best outcomes and long-term success. While Firm Foundations specializes in early intervention, children past the age of early intervention also greatly benefit from ABA therapy.
“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
— Ignacio Estrada, Ventriloquest & Special Education Teacher
Why choose Firm Foundations?
Firm Foundations Behavioral Therapy’s mission is to provide ethical and effective ABA treatment that brings peace for today, hope for tomorrow, and is grounded in love and care for each individual child and their family.
Our practice was founded by Taylor de Tuya, a BCBA and mother of two, who has served the Miami ASD community for over 8 years. Taylor noticed an abundance of ABA providers that serve hundreds of children at a time, at times sacrificing the quality, effectiveness, and ethics of ABA practices. This does a disheartening disservice to children in dire need of quality therapy.
Firm Foundations was created to provide ABA services to only a handful families at a time, providing a personal connection and a sense of family support that is completely focused on the needs of each individual child.
